Bev was quick to respond to my query. Very helpful with information and finding times to get me lessons in my wonky schedule. Good, caring instruction from Charlene. A lot of flexibility with times and locations - and a lot of caring and helpful guidance. And they managed to get me test within a week of me finishing my lessons. Passed the first time. They were great.Posted on Google![]()

A manual licence lets you drive both manual and automatic cars. An automatic licence only covers automatics, so taking manual driving lessons in London keeps every option open, from borrowing a friend’s car to hiring a van for a weekend move.
Our honest view? If you’re happy to put in a bit more effort at the start, manual is worth it. If you’ll only ever drive automatics, or the clutch is truly holding you back, automatic driving lessons (link: /automatic-driving-lessons/) are a sensible choice too.
At the start, yes. You’ve got a clutch and gears to manage on top of steering, mirrors and everything happening around you. For most learners the extra effort is front-loaded, and with practice the clutch soon stops feeling like a puzzle.
London does make manual driving lessons more interesting. Stop-start traffic means lots of moving off, bus lanes and cyclists need watching while you change gear, and a narrow street lined with parked cars leaves little room for a stall. That’s why it pays to build up to busy roads gradually, with an instructor who stays calm when the engine cuts out.
You’ll learn with an independent, London-based driving school that puts the facts up front:
This is where it all starts. You’ll find the bite point, move off smoothly, stop without stalling and change up and down through the gears.
Next come the moments that worry most new drivers. Hill starts teach you to hold the car on the clutch, while junctions and roundabouts bring gear choice, timing and observation together.
Think bus lanes, cyclists filtering past, delivery vans double-parked and junctions that are busy at almost any hour.
Finally, you’ll polish the manoeuvres, independent driving and the “show me, tell me” vehicle safety questions that examiners check.
You don’t need any experience before your first lesson. Bring your provisional driving licence and wear comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals properly.
If you haven’t got your provisional licence yet, you can apply for it on GOV.UK before you book.
Manual lessons suit:
If nerves are your biggest hurdle, take a look at our lessons for nervous drivers (link: /nervous-driver-lessons/). And if you’d feel more comfortable learning with a woman, female instructors are available.
There’s no fixed number. It depends on how often you have lessons, if you get private practice in between and how quickly the clutch clicks for you. Your instructor is the best person to give you an honest estimate once they’ve seen you drive.
Weekly two-hour lessons suit most people, because you get time to absorb each skill between sessions. An intensive course suits you if you can clear your diary and want to pass sooner, but it’s less suited to anyone who gets overwhelmed when a lot is crammed in. You can compare options on our intensive driving courses (link: /intensive-driving-courses/) page.
From your first enquiry to feeling confident on the road, we make getting started with your driving lessons simple.

Let's plan your first lesson.
Manual driving lessons with Drive Zire cost £45 per hour, and every lesson lasts at least two hours, so a standard lesson costs £90. Intensive courses start at £450 for 10 hours. The 20-hour course (£1,080) and 40-hour course (£1,980) both include car hire for your driving test.
Manual gives you the most freedom, because a manual licence covers both manual and automatic cars. Automatic is easier to pick up, especially in stop-start London traffic, but an automatic licence only lets you drive automatics. If you’re unsure, think about what you’re likely to drive in the next few years.
Yes. We teach both, so moving to automatic lessons is an option if the clutch is holding you back. Just remember that if you pass in an automatic, you’ll need to pass another test before you can drive a manual car. It’s worth talking it through with your instructor first.
Female instructors are available at Drive Zire. Mention it when you book, and we’ll let you know who can teach manual lessons in your part of London. Many learners, especially nervous ones, find it easier to relax with someone they feel comfortable with.
Yes. Bring your driving test report to your first lesson, because it lists exactly where the faults were. Your instructor can then focus on those areas instead of starting from scratch, which usually makes better use of your lessons and your money.
Yes. We’re nervous driver specialists, and your instructor will go at your pace. You won’t be rushed onto busy roads before you’re ready, and each step is explained before you take it. If a past lesson or test knocked your confidence, tell us when you book so we know where to start.
You’ll need a valid provisional driving licence. You can usually start learning to drive a car at 17, or at 16 if you get the top rate of the mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Wear comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals.
For most learners, yes. The start of any lesson goes on settling back in, so a two-hour lesson gives you far more time on the skill you’re working on. You’ll also cover more ground on real London roads, which helps when you’re preparing for your test.
